Environmental Philosophy
As caretakers of our land, we have a chance to make a direct, practical difference in combatting climate change and boosting biodiversity. When we grow a tree, mulch our soil, or let our grass grow longer, we could be actively increasing the carbon our garden absorbs. The LSGD environmental philosophy is to garden with a lighter touch, maximising the carbon the garden sequesters and helping to actively combat climate change.
LSGD do this through a number of methods. We source peat-free grown perennial plants where possible from local nurseries where the plants are already acclimatised to local growing conditions. We use no dig cultivation methods to minimise the disruption of soil once the garden has been planted, thus maintining a healthy soil ecosystem which will result in a more resilient garden. The use of mulch will keep plants topped up with nutrients and minimise watering requirements. Irrigation systems will be in place initially to establish plants, but we would look to reduce this over time by using the right plant for the right conditions. A well designed garden is a more resilient garden.
LSGD plants for a biodiverse ecosystem, encouraging wildlife into the garden to naturally control pests such as aphids and slugs, so there is no need to use herbicides or pesticides, allowing nature to do all the hard work. Planting appropriately for dense ground cover means there is less chance of weeds taking hold, but we encourage you to have an appreciation for native wildflowers and a slightly more wild look in the garden.
There is beauty to be found in all seasons and we plant accordingly, letting seedheads and dying back vegetation remain in place over winter to provide food and habitat for nature, as there is great beauty to be witnessed in these months when the frosts and cool winter light really highlight the plant structure. Together, we can tackle climate change and reap the rewards of a diverse, beautiful space teeming with life.
